UFO investigations or joy and loathing in Las Vegas
Opinion piece by James Clarkson

I am trying to sum up 2009 from the perspective of a UFO Investigator. For the last several years I have been chasing UFO’s reported to MUFON in Washington State, taking the cases reported via the computerized Case Management System and trying to evaluate each one, assigning the cases out to Field Investigators when possible, or handling many on my own.
For 2009, the words that come to mind are strange, surprising, elated and bewildered. This was the year of gaining greater insights into just how strange reality is, what is going on all around us, when compared to what the Disinformation Media would have us believe. This is also the year when I presented the story of my friend June Crain at the 7th Annual Las Vegas UFO Crash Retrieval Convention (http://www.ufoconference.com/ ) on November 8, 2009.
This was one of the proudest moments of my life, to be well received amongst researchers whose work I treasure. I offer my gratitude for the encouragement and praise I received from Ryan Wood, Nick Redfern, Richard Dolan, Linda Moulton Howe and most especially, Peter Robbins. I was very proud to be a contributor to this excellent conference. But there were some very disquieting moments; I literally heard the murmur of disbelief all around me. I have been hearing about this ever since.
I heard the International Director of MUFON, James Carrion, tell us that he does not support the Roswell explanation that is the center of many years of solid research by so very many dedicated researchers, most especially Thomas Carey and Donald R. Schmitt (See Witness to Roswell- Revised an Expanded Edition, New Page Books, 2009 available on Amazon). The famous July 1947 news story of the recovered, crashed “Flying Disc” released by Lt. Walter Haut at the direction of Colonel Blanchard CO of the Roswell Army Air Field was actually part of an elaborate ruse created in the hope that it might result in the capture of Soviet spies according to Mr. Carrion.
Mr. Carrion would apparently dispense with the heartfelt and difficult disclosures within what I consider to be one of the finest books written in this field, The Roswell Legacy by Jesse Marcel, Jr. (Big Sky Press, 2007 by Jesse Marcel Jr.) Apparently in this scenario, the security of the Spy Catcher Project was so critical that we have false declarations by brave men at the end of their lives, perpetuating the Spy Catcher Ruse by telling their families that Roswell happened the way we know it did. Or perhaps according to Mr. Carrion, they were all fools.
For those who know the Roswell history, Mr. Carrion’s shocking theory would mean we had in 1947, and probably since, a government so out-of-control that kidnapping, threats, blackmail and violence against its own citizens was an acceptable strategy.
I don’t know about anyone else, but I think the idea of a somewhat frightened group of elite military, scientific, and civilian experts, trying to cope with the reality of ET’s and their advanced technology in the post WWII era, who over-reacted in their cover-up tactics out of genuine concern for the public welfare, is a much more palatable scenario.
It would seem James Carrion is questioning the credibility, if not integrity of many of the Roswell key witnesses. I believe there are now around 600 direct and indirect witnesses to Roswell; are they all liars and fools? I think there is a simpler explanation, one more in keeping with Occam and his razor: what if he is just following orders, or said another way: Is there such a thing as an EX-intelligence operative? Those who do not learn from the lessons of history…
Until recently Mr. Carrion was the public face of the largest UFO investigating organization in the US; he just announced he has changed his role and will now become the business manager. I absolutely agree Mr. Carrion is welcome to have a healthy dissenting opinion on any UFO case. What I question is whether or not he, as the Director of MUFON, should discredit and minimize the dedication and perseverance of all of the Roswell researchers, treating us all as errant children protected by our “Father Knows Best” Black Budget Intelligence community. He also made a passing remark during his presentation that he has little belief in the validity of Crop Circle Research. That’s two of the pillars of UFO research knocked down; how many more will it take to topple the whole structure? I am sincerely hoping he doesn’t have enough clout to dissuade any of us from pursuing this vital research.
I for one have left 2009 and entered the brave, new world of 2010, wondering if MUFON is going the way of NICAP, destroyed from within by provocateurs pretending to be UFO researchers. I just lost an excellent investigator who is not renewing his subscription to MUFON because he was once a member of NICAP and said he doesn’t want to stay for the last act when he already knows how this play will end.
However, let me make it plain: I learned something from June’s life story. She loved her country and she was very proud to have worked at Wright-Patterson AFB. But she despised liars. The Mogul Project and the Falling Dummies story was a worn-out lie in 1997, and she knew it. I submit Mr. Carrion’s attempt at dissuading us from pursuing the Truth with his “We faked Roswell to catch a spy” scenario looks about as feeble as a downed, deflated weather balloon, and shouldn’t fool anyone who has paid attention.
So here is my mantra; feel free to adopt it and adapt it for your own: The extent of Their Lies only strengthens my will to investigate, research, and never give up.
